Where two or three are gathered in my name. there am I in the midst of them.
(Matthew 18:20)
I think of this phrase whenever I gather with
people to accomplish a goal. We are able to do so much and receive the gifts of
God so fully when we work together in His name. This is how we "conquer giants,"
(see the song link below).
Working as a team makes us stronger. Who is more powerful to have on your team than God?! Those who play team sports know there is a time when you contribute points and a time when others need to contribute because they have the talent to be successful in that situation.
Why do we ask for God's help? I'm glad you asked!
I am reminded of the Bread of Life example Jesus gives in the Gospel of John. In
chapter 6, people come to Jesus after he has fed a hungry crowd. He tells them,
"You are looking for me not because you saw the signs, but because you ate the
loaves and were filled. Do not work for food that parishes, but for the food
that endures for eternal life, which the Son of Man will give you." (John 6:
26-27). Being filled with Jesus and the Holy Spirit makes us eternally
full! Jesus said, "I am the bread of life; whoever comes to me will never hunger, and whoever believes in me will never thirst" (John 6: 35).
The faith we have in God fills us and gives us the gifts and talents we are called to use in our lives. We can be of service to others. We can bring joy to others when we do something for them.
Our parish Sweet Corn Festival is coming up this weekend! A time for fun and friends. The rides and food are great. Walking around enjoying the sights and sounds is something I know I am looking forward to. It takes the time and talents of many people to make the festival a success. What a time to recognize God in our midst! See you there!
I loved the imagery in this song when I heard it! Enjoy MercyMe's "You Are I Am."
